Donner Pass Topographical Print by James L. Tucker

50.00

Donner Pass, in the high Sierras, is known for it's deep blue sky and granite rock faces. Sitting in that space between the mountains and the sky, there was no doubt what colors and texture represented this place.

Being in these places and observing the sky, flora, and topography I started with gestural ink washes and dozens of photographs of the sky at different points of the day. Back in my studio I mixed inks to replicate the sky gradients and ran split fountain linoleum block letterpress prints. The topography of each location was then embedded into the paper with no ink, leaving a blind impression. Lastly, the ink washes were made into halftone plates and printed in another pass riding across the sky plate
