Joshua Tree Topographical Print by James L. Tucker

Joshua Tree National Park, more specific, Hidden Valley Camp. The desert heat is suffocating. Creosote bushes hide Desert Tortoises from the intense mid day sun. The only relief is dusk, when the sky grows dusty and indigo blue.

Being in these places and observing the sky, flora, and topography I started with gestural ink washes and dozens of photographs of the sky at different points of the day. Back in my studio I mixed inks to replicate the sky gradients and ran split fountain linoleum block letterpress prints. The topography of each location was then embedded into the paper with no ink, leaving a blind impression. Lastly, the ink washes were made into halftone plates and printed in another pass riding across the sky plate
