Ojai Topographical Print by James L. Tucker

50.00

Ojai, California rests in valley that offers respite for orange trees, and flowers from the surrounding arid mountains and salt blown coast. A shangri-la not only for botanicals but for a weary mind. Hidden right against the crux of the mountains, warm winds blow, and stir up the orange blossoms. Is this place all in ones head when you can find it on a map?

Being in these places and observing the sky, flora, and topography I started with gestural ink washes and dozens of photographs of the sky at different points of the day. Back in my studio I mixed inks to replicate the sky gradients and ran split fountain linoleum block letterpress prints. The topography of each location was then embedded into the paper with no ink, leaving a blind impression. Lastly, the ink washes were made into halftone plates and printed in another pass riding across the sky plate
