Amy's Kitchen at The Aesthetic Union: A Listening Party

Amy's Kitchen Organics (the beloved San Francisco reading series, not the purveyor of frozen burritos) and the Aesthetic Union team up to bring you an evening of poetry, performance, and music.

For one Tuesday evening, Amy's popular reading series takes up residence at our letterpress studio in a celebration of eclectic performance. The evening features poet and country musician Julian Talamantez Brolaski, Portland-based poet Rodney Koeneke, experimental playwright Amy Langer, and lyric essayist Emji Spero. A live performance from Oakland-based collective Klanghaus will cap off the night.

Admission is free and refreshments will be served.

Opening Reception: Being & Somethingness at Alite Outpost

Alite Designs presents new work by James Tucker of The Aesthetic Union in Being & Somethingness. This series of topographical abstracts showcases the versatility of letterpress and the beauty of California's legendary landscapes.

With this series Tucker sought to record his own experience of six inspiring destinations: Bolinas, Bishop, Donner Pass, Joshua Tree, Big Sur, and Sibley. Steeped in history and personal mythologies, these natural areas are household names in California and beyond.

“Being in these places and observing the sky, flora, and topography I started with gestural ink washes and dozens of photographs of the sky at different points of the day. Back in my studio I mixed inks to replicate the sky gradients and ran split fountain linoleum block letterpress prints. The topography of each location was then embedded into the paper with no ink, leaving a blind impression. Lastly, the ink washes were made into halftone plates and printed in another pass riding across the sky plate.” - James Tucker
