Alite Designs presents new work by James Tucker of The Aesthetic Union in Being & Somethingness. This series of topographical abstracts showcases the versatility of letterpress and the beauty of California's legendary landscapes.
With this series Tucker sought to record his own experience of six inspiring destinations: Bolinas, Bishop, Donner Pass, Joshua Tree, Big Sur, and Sibley. Steeped in history and personal mythologies, these natural areas are household names in California and beyond.
“Being in these places and observing the sky, flora, and topography I started with gestural ink washes and dozens of photographs of the sky at different points of the day. Back in my studio I mixed inks to replicate the sky gradients and ran split fountain linoleum block letterpress prints. The topography of each location was then embedded into the paper with no ink, leaving a blind impression. Lastly, the ink washes were made into halftone plates and printed in another pass riding across the sky plate.” - James Tucker
