Bolinas // James Lewis Tucker & Chris Fritton

from 200.00

Bolinas, created in collaboration with Chris Fritton, is a letterpress art print inspired by two Northern California beach towns: Bolinas and Stinson Beach.

Even though they are only separated by a narrow inlet, these two locations are almost on the opposite ends of the Northern California beach town spectrum. However, a sunset in each town always ends with one staring into the endless Pacific, where towns boundaries don't mean much.

When James visited these sites, he was able to observe the sky, flora, and topography; which all served as inspiration for “Bolinas”. He photographed the sky throughout different points of the day to establish a color pallette for this piece. He then returned to his studio in San Francisco to mix inks until he developed the perfect pigments to replicate the sky gradient he had captured.

The print was brought to life using split fountain linoleum block letterpress prints. He then used the same ink washes that he created the blue-orange gradient sky background with to create halftone plates and printed in another pass riding across. Lastly, the topography of each location was then embedded into the paper with no ink, therefore leaving behind a blind impression.
