Excavation // James Lewis Tucker

from 100.00

Excavation is a letterpress art print created by San Francisco artist James Lewis Tucker that features distinct geometric shapes and depth-filled patterns. In the words of James, this piece “explores a childhood nightmare and a dream of restoration”. Made with reduction linocut and handmade inks, “Excavation” implements colorful layering of different ink consistencies to saturate the paper. In turn, this gives a sense of depth to print that is normal only achieved through painting.

Words written by James Lewis Tucker inspired by this print are below:

In back of the barn is a dark pond. It was a place where you didn't want to touch the water. A lone white fish swam circles and water moccasins guarded the steep embankments. When I visited after 13 years oil slick the surface and weeds poked through the middle. Quicksand. Tall grass and branches hindered much of a visit. That night I had a dream of draining that childhood nightmare. Digging buckets of mud from it's depths. Carefully taking the last fish and putting them in fresh water. Finally reaching the bottom, I found there was clear blue water under it all and it started to fill again. Bringing life.
