Bishop Topographical Print by James L. Tucker
Bishop, California, more specially The Buttermilks. Known as a pioneering rock climbing spot on the east side of the Sierras. Bishop sits in between those new jagged peaks and the rolling high White Mountains that border the deserts of Nevada. A river runs through the valley streaking a swath of green down the center between ancient and old.
Being in these places and observing the sky, flora, and topography I started with gestural ink washes and dozens of photographs of the sky at different points of the day. Back in my studio I mixed inks to replicate the sky gradients and ran split fountain linoleum block letterpress prints. The topography of each location was then embedded into the paper with no ink, leaving a blind impression. Lastly, the ink washes were made into halftone plates and printed in another pass riding across the sky plate
