I really love making prints like these. Of course I love the process of letterpress and block printing but when I get an idea about standing behind a cause, I dive deep into it. It often leads me down a rabbit hole, and this one did.

Personally my first contact with the American Indian Movement was when I worked for the National Park Service in SF. A part of the Bay’s long history of protest is the Occupation of Alcatraz in 1969 by Red Power activists led by Richard Oaks and LaNada Means. They held it for 19 months before the Feds laid siege to the island, essentially starving them out. It’s a fascinating chapter to this story and I hope you look more into it. I actually got into a slightly heated argument with an ex-docent of Alcatraz in Colorado, of all places. He said the Occupation destroyed much of the island when I retored “not as much as the prison did”. He wasn’t expecting that.

Land Back grows upon the actions of reclaiming federally held land for the native tribes. Land Back is a movement that aims to re-establish indigenous political authority over territories Indigenous tribes and activist groups claim as belonging to them. This movement has real political traction and action. This year Biden proclaimed October 11th Indigenous Peoples Day. This is a step in the right direction but not enough. We have marred sacred land. We mismanage federal land that is prone to massive wildfires. We dig and destroy water tables and native biomes all in the name of “progress”. Land Back is a clear path to rectify a long time wrong that my ancestors committed against the heirs to this land.
